This article discusses the European Commission's science and knowledge service, Joint Research Centre, which uses the EURDEP system to conduct nuclear emergency exercises. The objective is to improve the quality and accuracy of the exercises through simulated dispersion of radionuclides and the injection of fictitious monitoring datasets into the EURDEP system. The benefits include increased perception and understanding of emergency responses, expanded functionalities of the EURDEP system, and support for European nuclear exercises.

Background, objective and method Background The European Commission, Directorate General for Energy organizes international exercises in collaboration with other international organizations to test its radiological and nuclear emergency procedures, and the ECURIE and EURDEP systems. The exercises are usually based on a hypothetical release scenario. Objective To increase the quality and accuracy of the EURDEP/ECURIE exercises. Method 1) To simulate the dispersion of radionuclides (atmospheric dispersion models, such as RIMPUFF, Match); 2) To extract the fictitious monitoring datasets in EURDEP stations impacted by the plume; 3) To automatically inject them at regular times into the EURDEP system (synchronized with the on-going of the exercise). 4) To show them through regular EURDEP stations as if they were measured in almost real-time.
Background, objective and method Example: Convex-ECUREX-2017 ECUREX-2017 Location: Paks NPP (Hungary) ; Release: 28 March 04:31 am Source term was provided by the competent authority NOMADS meteorological files Grid size 20 km Output: Total gamma dose rate

Benefits To increase the amount of EURDEP monitoring stations in order to better defined the movement and the area affected by the plume. To increase the perception of the emergency response for the participants ADM + EURDEP system To expand the functionalities of the EURDEP system to host, nuclear and radiological exercises To create ad-hoc and real-time European nuclear and radiological dispersion scenarios A direct support to ECURIE exercises and a potential support to bi/multi-lateral exercises
