Upcoming College Fairs • Poughkeepsie Galleria Mall: 10/1 at 4:00pm • Dutchess Community College: 10/15 from 6:00-8:00pm • Danbury Mall: 10/21 from 5:00-8:00
College Visits • College visits happen regularly here during the school day! • The schedule is always updated on the website: • https://www.wappingersschools.org/Page/7095 • There is still time to visit a school in person if you want as well, and/or use the virtual tour option available for many colleges on SCOIR.
How to Apply? • SCOIR is how you search for colleges and keep track of the colleges where you want to apply, NOT how you apply. • Common App/College Website/SUNY App is HOW YOU APPLY to colleges. You will need to create an account for each method. • The Common App is where you can send multiple applications in one- but pay separate fees. https://www.commonapp.org/ • The SUNY App is similar, but for SUNYs only. https://www.suny.edu/applysuny/ • We only known when/where/how you applied when you tell us- this is why the transcript request form is so important!
Deadlines and Dates • There are different ways to apply- Early Action (non-binding decision), Early Decision (binding decision), Regular Admissions (set due date), and Rolling Admissions (accepting applications throughout the year). All materials must be in to your counselor two weeks prior to the due date. • All deadlines after December 1st are still due before December 1st to your counselor!
Transcript Request Form • Once you apply to a college, your next steps are: • Move the college to the APPLIED column on your SCOIR account • Complete the Transcript Request Form and hand it DIRECTLY to your counselor • This tells us where and when to send your documents!
SAT/ACT Scores • Remember that YOU must send your AP, SAT and/or ACT scores DIRECTLY from College Board or ACT • Log on to your account to select where the scores should be sent. • Counselors do not have access to this information and can not send it on your behalf. • If you are still taking the SAT or ACT (October or November), be sure to send this either on the test day or shortly after.
Financial Aid • Applying for Financial Aid is a separate application than the college application. This opens October 1st! • There is federal aid (FAFSA) and state aid (NY TAP- if you are attending a school in NY), which have separate applications. • APPLY FOR BOTH! • www.fafsa.org (FAFSA- Federal) • www.hesc.ny.gov (TAP- State) • If you are a student who receives free or reduced lunch, remember to check out EOP and HEOP programs at colleges- this may be a separate application. • Monday, September 23rd at 7:00 in the library- Financial Aid Presentation!
SCOIR Mobile App Download • Take out your phones and download SCOIR’s mobile app in the App Store or in Google Play. • Input your username (school email) and password(FirstnameStudentID#) to gain access to your account. • Allow for “Push Notifications” so you can receive important messages and communications.
Explore SCOIR • Take some time to keep exploring SCOIR! • Do a college search • Request letters of recommendations electronically from your teachers • Add colleges to your “applying list”
