General Funding: • Duration: 3 years • Fund: 500,000 Euros • Starts: October 2004 • Partners: • Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) – Jordan • Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) – Sweden • Technical University of Valencia (UPV) - Spain • Functions: • A Master Program in Wireless Communications at JUST • A Training Program for Practicing Engineers

Objectives • Graduating better engineers in wireless and internet technologies • Training practicing engineers in new technologies • Promoting the use of hot wireless and internet technologies in Jordan • Attracting students and trainees from the region • Widening the scope of knowledge and increasing the experience of JUST professors • Improving lab and library facilities at JUST • Establishing long lasting cooperation with internationally respected institutions • Establishing solid cooperation with industry

  4. Features • New equipment for labs at JUST • New books and electronic subscriptions for JUST • Participation of KTH and UPV instructors in teaching and training • Participation of leading international experts in teaching and training • Scholarships for Jordanian students at KTH and UPV

  6. Current Status • Visit to KTH 22/9-2/10/2004 • Visit to UPV 14-20/11/2004 • Working on officially establishing the center and creating the master program • Center is to be tentatively launched in early 2005 • Working on specific project components

  7. KTH Visit • Visit took place 22/9-2/10/2004 • Participants • Mohammad M. Banat (JUST) • Lennart Johansson (KTH) • Victor Kordas (KTH) • Achievements • Studying experience of KTH on master programs in wireless technologies and internetworking • Studying experience of KTH in establishing and operation of a wireless centre • Coordination of the forthcoming stages of the project

  8. UPV Visit • Visit took place 14-20/11/2004 • Participants • Mohammad M. Banat (JUST) • Ibrahim Ghareeb (JUST) • Carlos E. Palau (UPV) • Achievements • Studying experience of UPV on master programs in telecommunications • Studying experience of UPV in establishing and operation of a wireless centre • Starting cooperation on preparing labs and study plans • Coordination of the forthcoming stages of the project

Center Establishment and Design of Master Program • An initial website (http://www.just.edu.jo/~wireless) has been built • A devoted email address has been obtained • A steering committee at JUST has been formed (this has particularly been crucial) • A technical committee at JUST has been formed • A few support staff have been appointed • A location at JUST to host the center is made available • Technical committee has started preparing a draft study plan and admission terms

  10. Launching the Center • To take place tentatively early in 2005 • A KTH delegation is visiting JUST 28/2-6/3/2005 to: • Study current state of the project at JUST • Prepare for a launching event • Coordinate future stages

Scholarships • An ad to a call for applications has been prepared and submitted to the VP of JUST • Several potential scholars have started applying to KTH and UPV • An agreement has been signed with UPV to facilitate student and staff exchange • A similar agreement (even though not needed) is being negotiated with KTH

  12. Books, Labs, Short Courses and Other Issues • A list of books has been compiled and purchase procedures have started • Lab equipment is being carefully prepared • A few laptops are being ordered • Several calls for short course submissions have been made • Contacts to explore local interest in short courses have started, initial indications are encouraging • A financial account has been opened at JUST and is ready to receive funds • A yearly activities plan for 2005 has been prepared (this is attached) • Establishment of an industrial council is being discussed with JUST officials and with potential industry partners

  13. Project Extensions and Supplements • An agreement has been signed with “n+i” in France for • Scholarships • Staff and student exchange • Joint higher study programs • A “MENA” joint PhD project is being prepared for submission to the Swedish government by next April • A new Tempus project proposal with KTH is being investigated, it will focus on strengthening ties with industry • The technical outcomes of an IMG project (6-20/2/2005) may be used to support the project
