POP QUIZ Science Achievement Standard 1.5
Answer the following • Write the formulae for • Aluminium sulfate • Ammonium carbonate • Calcium chloride • Explain how sodium oxide has the balanced formula of Na2O • Compare and contrast C12 and C14 • Explain how the lithium atom is neutral • Compare and contrast the magnesium atom and ion
Balancing formulae • Aluminium Sulfate • Al2(SO4)3 • Ammonium Carbonate • (NH4)2CO3 • Calcium Chloride • CaCl2
Explain how sodium oxide has the balanced formula na2o • The sodium ion has a charge of +1 (because the atom has lost 1 valence electron to form the ion with a charge of +1) • And the oxide ion has a charge of -2 (because the atom has gained 2 electrons to form an oxide ion with a charge of -2). • The ionic compound sodium is neutral overall so for the charges to be balanced, there must be 2 positive sodium ions to 1 negative oxide ion.
Compare and contrast c12 and c14 • Both C12 and C14 are the carbon element as they have the same atomic number. • They therefore have 6 protons and 6 electrons. • They both have the same electron configuration of 2,4 • However C12 has 6 neutrons in its nucleus so the atomic mass is 12, whereas C14 has 8 neutrons so its atomic mass is 14. • C12 and C14 are isotopes.
EXPLAIN HOW THE LITHIUM ATOM IS NEUTRAL • For an atom to be neutral, it needs to have its positive and negative charges balanced • When elements are in their atomic form, they are neutral. • Lithium has an atomic number of 3 so it has 3 positive protons in its nucleus and 3 negative electrons in the shells. • The charges are balanced so the lithium atom is neutral
Compare and contrast the magnesium atom and ion • Similarities: • Differences:
