The Spanish Language and Its Spread Part 1: The Spanish Language • Around 100 B.C., the Roman empire took control of the place we call Spain • They spoke Latin and forced the population to speak it

Regular people spoke a different type of Latin called “Vulgar Latin” • It was a mix of Latin and the language people spoke in Spain before Latin • After 600 years, the romans were kicked out, and “vulgar Latin” evolved into Spanish

Los Reyes CatÓlicos: Fernando e Isabela • Married in 1469 • United Spain into one kingdom • Expand empire through colonization
Cristobal ColÓn • Sailed in 1492 looking for a westward way to India • Landed in current day Dominican Republic • Started trade between Europe and the Americas
Indigenous (native) inhabitants of the Caribbean Were Converted to Christianity and forced to labor Nearly wiped out by disease, overwork, battling with Spaniards Los Tainos y Los Españoles
Los Conquistadores • Used Hispaniola as a base for exploration of Americas • Conquered and converted native civilizations to Christianity • Often used violence
Los EsclavosAfricanos • Growth of colonies required cheap labor • Slaves especially used to harvest sugar in caribbean
Identidad e Independencia • Problems in Spain allowed some autonomy in colonies • Colonies began to trade independently with France, Britain and US colonies • Individual identities formed • By 1900, all Spanish colonies fought for and won independence from Spain.
