What Is Assistive Technology? • A device, software, or tool used to assist students with disabilities, and a reading, writing, or speech impediment.
The Benefits • Creates a learning environment that is least-restrictive. • Allows all students to receive, and complete course work, regardless of their handicap. • Provides a means for students with disabilities to work independently, and with confident. • Improves communication and organizational skills.
Assistive Technology Software • Text-to-Speech – Software for students who require modifications for speech, or assistance for the blind. • Word Predication – Assist students who are deficient in writing syntax and vocabulary. • Word Processing – Assist students with writing disabilities.
Assistive Technology Devices • Braille Readers – Allows the visually impaired to read required coursework. • Braille Keyboards – Enables students who are visually impaired to type documents on the computer. • Auditory Amplification Systems – Assists students with hearing disabilities. • Overhead Projection System – Provides enlarged documents for students with vision impediments.
Assistive Technology Training • Provided through technology services and the child study team on a student-case basis. • Activities for staff members are integrated into professional development activities and knowledge sharing days.
