Curriculum • The Manzanita Project – “Greening the Curriculum” • All-day workshop, City College, Spring 2011 • 14 participants from district colleges and one from SFCC • 3 speakers • Dr. Jay Vavra, award-winning science teacher, HTH • Paul Maschka, 18 years as lead horticulturalist at SD Zoo, now teaches Urban Farming classes at City College • Jill Moreno-Ikari, Ed.D, dissertation on Sustainability in Basic Skills English Composition • Readings, discussion, small group work, visit to Urban Farm
Recycling • Terracycle Program • “Writing Brigade” • Drop off boxes for pens, pencils, markers, Sharpies • H & M bldgs • Library • Science lab • Mailroom Blue Bin Update: Brown paper towels = yes
eWaste Procedures • eWaste includes keyboards, cables, mice, anything electronic or digital (working or not) • Schools have Equipment Transfer Documents, list all serial or asset numbers • Warehouse can come pick up if items are large • Items are sent to Surplus, which sells them at auction • No eWaste recycling is done by district
New Building Green Appliance Update • LLRC, Cafeteria, Science wing expansion, new Administration building Dyson Airblade Hand Dryers Haws Hydration Stations
Organic Garden • Current garden stewards: Science Club Biology students EOPS students Honors Anthro students Aviation faculty Miramar Café Reprographics staff Nutrition students • Applications just closed for cool season • Plan to move behind Child Development • New garden assistant, intern from City College Urban Farm
Vernal Pool Habitat Interpretive Site • Prop N funds set aside to develop Vernal Pool area • Integrate it into our curriculum • Create asset and educational resource for the community • Meetings began Nov 2010 with EST members, Biology faculty, Gafcon managers • Faculty/EST created document to guide development of site for curriculum • Currently choosing contractors with environmental specialty who know campus environment as well as conservation laws
