Cost-Benefit Analysis • What is the cost of a typical case? • -6 police callouts • -8 GP visits • -6 prescriptions • -4 A&E attendances for minor wounding • -2 A&E attendances for serious wounding • -12 nights in a refuge • -Police involvement in S18 prosecution • -Other CJS involvement in S18 prosecution • = £14,000
Net Saving • Total annual cost for MARAC assuming 10 partner agencies, lead agency and IDVA’s = £71,000. • MARAC could review approximately 400 cases a year. • Running costs are equivalent to approximately 5 ‘average’ very high risk cases.
Cardiff Evaluation Outcomes • At the 6 month follow up point 63% of victims had no repeat violence. • At the 12 month stage this figure was still 42%. • Those who had suffered repeat incidents reported them at an earlier stage of abuse.
MARAC Process • Emergency Callout/referral from agency. • Risk assessment checklist completed. • Risk assessment reviewed and risk level assessed. • Established as VHR. • Case referred to MARAC.
The MARAC • Lead agency collects referrals with name, DOB and address of victim, children and perpetrator and name of referring agency. • Circulates list 8 working days before MARAC to all attending agencies. • Relevant professionals research cases. • MARAC meeting held, information shared. • Actions agreed. • Outstanding actions from last meeting highlighted.
MARAC Statistics • No cases = 112 • No children = 128 • No actions = 219
