Technologies & factors which drive our thinking • Ethernet & Internet Protocol (IP) • The default worldwide protocol for device communication • Quality of Service (QoS) • The ability to deliver voice, video and data across a single infrastructure • Network Intelligence • Developing devices which enable clearer decisions • Ease of Management • Reducing the strain of deploying technology • Service & Support • Ease of doing business
Commitment to Green Technology • Manufacturing. • Cost to the environment producing the devices • Reducing operational power. • Energy Star power supply efficiency • Cable length ‘measure and minimize’ • Low power mode – turn off ‘unwanted’ functionality • Lower power silicon (chip geometries) • Local environment. • Noise reduction • The decision to go ‘green’ is a corporate strategy, involving the whole company.

IPv6 is fairly future proof • IPv4 (32 bit address) offers Four billion unique addresses 4,294,967,296 • IPv4 address example: 132.247.148.138 • IPv6 (128 bit address using hex) offers 2 = 3.4 x 10 =340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456 • =600,000 billion, billion devices per square metre of the Earth's surface* • IPv6 address example: 2001:0470:1f09:0d2b:0000:0000:0000:0300 • OK to remove leading zeros: 2001:470:1f09:d2b::300. • If your service provider does not support IPv6, tunnel to one that does e.g. • Hurricane Electric Internet services http://tunnelbroker.net/ • Future GPS & Internet connected windscreen wipers reporting the weather? • *According to European research networking firm Dante, which manages the Géant2 multi-gigabit pan-European network 128 38
IPv6 is tried & tested, it works! • Widely supported in Japan • ATI installed IPv6 in Hospitals • The entire Beijing 2008 Olympics network used IPv6 addressing • Fixed and mobile broadband technology to supported HD online video • Coverage of the sporting events held at the 37 different venues • All lighting, security, and HVAC systems used IPv6 • All connected directly to the Internet No need for Private IP addr. NAT • IPv6 part of 3G UMTS & LTE/SAE (3GPP) Broadband Cellular
IPv6 is gaining more & support Google Over IPv6 (Since March 2008) Supports: Search, Alerts, Docs, Finance, Gmail, Health, iGoogle, News, Reader, Picasa, Maps, Wave, Chrome and Android Supported dual stack since June 2010 Proposing hack to DNS to allow IPv4 users to see IPv6 Websites (March 2010) Dual stack support promised 2011
IPv6 in NHS Wales Strategy (2009) • National Infrastructure Strategy NHS Wales (2009) • 4.6 IP Addressing on NHS Wales Network • Historical Situation • IP addresses used by NHS Wales Network were in the range 130.x.x.x to 145.x.x.x. they were real IP addresses, but were not registered to NHS Wales. These clashed with the registered users of these IP addresses. • NHS Wales also had IP addresses that clashed with NHS England • Strategic aim • To monitor the adoption of IPv6in the UK and to plan a migration to IPv6 if / when the time is right • Proposed next steps • Complete the migration to the new IP addresses. • Explore the implications of migration to IPv6, develop an implementation plan
Computers with dual Stack - IPv4 & IPv6 • Hybrid dual-stack IPv6/IPv4 implementations support a special class of addresses, the IPv4-mapped IPv6 addresses. • This address type has its first 80 bits set to zero and the next 16 set to one, while its last 32 bits are filled with the IPv4 address. • These addresses are commonly represented in the standard IPv6 format, but having the last 32 bits written in the customary dot-decimal notation of IPv4; • Eg, ::ffff:192.0.2.128 represents the IPv4 address 192.0.2.128.
Allied Telesis IPv6 Focus • Wire-speed IPv6 switching and routing in hardware on Adv L3 products • Ability to run both IPv4 and IPv6 on the network for Legacy IPv4 • IPv6 Integral Security Good for Hospitals http://inetcore.com/project/ipv4ec/index_en.html
IPv6 makes things Secure a. IPv4 communication Internal and External communications are generally plain text, you can encrypt, but it is costly and complex b. IPv6 communication IPsec is native to IPv6. It is standard to encrypt from End to End, virtually eliminating the risk of interception In IPv4, the communication using plaintext. Possible to intercept it anywhere. Server IPv4 Communication Server In IPv6, the communication is encrypted. Not intercepted. IPv6 Communication 67
IPv6 makes things easy! a. IPv4 In a huge organization like the NHS, it is difficult to manage Private IP addresses. (NHS Wales using same IP as NHS England! Etc.) To connect a public IP to a private IP is a complicated procedure b. IPv6 Auto generation of IP address A global IP address is generated automatically from the MAC address Integrity of IPv6 in Windows Vista has been improved. 68
Secure communication between sites IPv4 communication – requires a lot of router complicated configuration Communication using plain text can be intercepted within the hospital. Encrypted communication outside the hospital. Communication using plain text can be intercepted within the hospital. Internet Router NAT Encryption & Decryption Router NAT Encryption & Decryption IPv6 communication – very easy to set up Entire encrypted communication Internet Routing only Routing only 69
