Feedback in Art is ongoing…. It’s also very personal. Art is by nature subjective. Creating art is creative problem solving. Everyone does it differently. Feedback can make or break a student’s feelings of success. There are two kinds of effort in Art that require feedback….

It’s also very personal. Art is by nature subjective. Creating art is creative problem solving. Everyone does it differently. Feedback can make or break a student’s feelings of success.
There are two kinds of effort in Art that require feedback…
Work Effort Craftsmanship= care & neatness Engaged = focused on the task Following directions = I cans
Creative effort Originality Willingness to experiment Creative problem solving Demonstrate higher level thinking in applying new media, techniques, or concepts to their own work.
Effort is more important than talent. We don’t grade on talent!
Just like playing an instrument or a sport, art takes practice, patience, and persistence! 3 P’s!
Feedback comes from three sources: Teacher Peers Self
a directions W O R K a neatness a unique CREATIVITY a stretch OOPS! Rethink. STOP Change now. AWESOME! Keep it up! Teacher feedback is… Verbal: Quick, specific comment Sit down conversation Class critique Non-verbal: Thumbs up/thumbs down Table label feedback (in progress!)
Written Rubrics based on “I can” statements are on each table as students work. A graded rubric easily communicates exactly why any points were taken off. Points are assigned specifically to degrees of mastery of each “I can” statement. Personal written feedback on rubrics clarifies specifics and offers suggestions for improvement.
Teacher feedback as incentive: A true artist uses… hands + head + heart = Art ART CRAFT LABOR Artwork that demonstratesall three earns a heart stamp. X# of heart stamps = invite only art activity!
Peer feedback is… • Valuable! • Students are encouraged to ask peers for opinions… • triggers higher level thinking and discussion • value peer opinion
Self feedback is… • Ongoing: • Check table rubric – “I Cans” • “Stand back” check • Written self-reflection portion on rubrics • Fall 2012: students will track self-evaluation • to gauge improvement…Improve effort/achievement score with each major artwork= becoming a better artist!
Art Effort & Achievement Self-Evaluation Rubric Fall 2012 Work Effort & Creative Effort Success 4=engaged: thoughtfully focused. stretched: worked beyond my ability and challenged myself to try something new & original. 3=engaged: mostly focused. stretched: worked to the best of my ability. 2=engaged: “kind of” focused stretched: worked but did not challenge myself. 1=engaged : not very focused. stretched: worked below my ability. 4=I went beyond the assignment objectives. 3= I met the assignment objectives. 2= I met some of the assignment objectives 1=I met few or none of the assignment objectives.
