Radical Days of the Revolution. Colin Lagator , Troy Meurer , Kevin Wegner, and Darius Coleman. Radical Phase. One of the bloodiest regimes. Leaders wanted to extend the Revolution. The French were being destroyed by Prussians. Parisians believed that the King was a traitor.

  1. Radical Days of the Revolution Colin Lagator, Troy Meurer, Kevin Wegner, and Darius Coleman

Radical Phase • One of the bloodiest regimes. • Leaders wanted to extend the Revolution. • The French were being destroyed by Prussians. • Parisians believed that the King was a traitor. • Parisians storm the palace and royal family flees(1792). • Citizens attack prisons and kill 1,200 prisoners.

  3. Radicals Take Control • Radicals take control of the Assembly. • Suffrage is extended to all men. • Radicals wants to abolish monarchy. • Jacobins controls the convention of abolishing the monarchy. • King Louis XVI on trial for being a “traitor”. • King Louis XVI and Queen Marie-Antoinette executed(1793).

  4. Terror and DangerGrip France • 1793- France creates Committee of Public Safety (CPS) • Had Absolute Power • MaximilienRobespierreruns CPS • Used terror to control • “The first maxim of our politics ought to be to lead the people by means of reason and the enemies of the people by terror.”

  5. Reign Of Terror • Sept 1793-July 1794 • Guillotine- tool of Destruction • Death of Robespierre

  6. The Revolution Enters Its Third Stage • Middle Class leading force • Mostly professional people, doctors, merchants, etc. • Moved away from the Terror • Developed a new constitution • 5 man Directory, and 2 house legislative • Directory was weak and faced discontent • 1795-1799

  7. The Revolution Enters Its Third Stage Cont. • Peace with Prussia and Spain • Wars with Austria • Corrupt leaders • Money for own benefit • Neglected problems • Rising bread prices caused riots • Rising of royal support threatened Directory

  8. The Revolution Enters Its Third StageCont. Cont. • Émigré's were returning • Supporters of monarchy won majority in legislature (1797) • Politicians turned to Napoleon Bonaparte • Successful military leader in wars with Austria • Hero • Planned to use him to accomplish goals

  11. A New Government • By 1799, • The Revolution has overthrown the Monarchy • The Church is brought under state control • Church officials are elected and salaried • All titles except “citizen” were disposed of

  12. On Louis XVI • Called “Citizen Capet” from Medieval French Dynasty

  13. Nationalism spreads • Revolution gave “citizens” a strong national Identity • A variety of songs and dances about Revolution emerge • In Marseilles, people were marching to “La Marseilles” • La Marseilles later became the national anthem

  14. Social reform • State schools to replace religious ones • Organized systems to help • Poor • Old soldiers • War widows • Slavery Abolished in France's Caribbean colonies
