  3. What has changed? • No marks for AO4 (Knowledge of target country) • 3 bullet points to be adhered to

  4. Weighting of AS Unit 2 • Listening 30 marks • Reading 30 marks • Translation 20 marks • Writing 50 marks

  5. Assessment Objectives • AO2 Understanding and Response - 20 marks • AO3 target Language – 30 marks

  6. AO2: Understanding and Response To gain access to the top band of marks, candidates should: • Show a clear understanding and good knowledge of the topic • Address the question appropriately and coherently • Have minimum repetition and no irrelevant material • Show a good degree of personal engagement and analysis

  7. AO2: Structuring the response The response should consist of approximately 5 parts: • A short introduction • The response to the 3 bullet points which will form the bulk of the essay • A short conclusion

  8. AO3: Target Language To gain access to the top band of marks, candidates should: • Show a very good command of the language • Use frequent examples of accurate and complex structures appropriate to AS level • Show evidence of idiomatic language • Errors should only appear where more complex language is used

  9. AO3: Checking the answer • Candidates should check their work for careless errors: • Spelling of basic vocabulary • Adjectival agreements • Verb forms • Pronouns • Copula constructions

  10. General advice to candidates • Prepare a few sub-points for each of the 3 bullet points before planning the introduction and conclusion • Discursive type response • Vocabulary associated with discussion

  11. General advice to candidates • Check the word count • Keep a balance between the 3 bullet points • Use link words to sequence ideas and structure sentences • Use transitions between paragraphs • Use idiomatic language and complex structures

  12. General advice to candidates Don’t • borrow phrases from the stimulus • include any irrelevant material • repeat ideas • overdo pre-learnt phrases
