Poona Outbreak • On August 18, 2015, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was notified, through PulseNet, of 32 people infected with Salmonella Poona of an indistinguishable pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) pattern in 13 states. • Cucumbers were identified as the suspected food vehicle.

Poona Outbreak • Cucumber Facts: • Grown on vines and maybe field grown • Ideal growing temperature ranges 65 – 75 F • Slicing (Persian) types are grown to be eaten fresh • Shelf life of a cucumber is 10 -14 days after harvest • Cucumbers may be washed, but more commonly are cleaned with brushed rollers to remove field debris • Cucumbers are generally waxed during packing and handling • Cucumbers *from greenhouses* may also be waxed, or they may be individually wrapped, depending on the variety and the market they are going to • Cucumbers are very chill-sensitive. If stored too cold for more than 6 hours, they will break down rapidly • Storage below 50F (10C) results in chilling injury in as little as 2 to 3 days, while storage at 59F (15C) or higher results in rapid yellowing; both types of temperature abuse result in loss of quality • Ethylene sensitive (exposure will cause a rapid senescence and subsequent breakdown), therefore, should not be stored with products that produce ethylene (e.g., bananas)

  5. S. Poona Outbreak • Federal and state partners collected documents and cucumber samples throughout the supply chain.

  6. S. Poona Outbreak • Traceback lead to a common distributer for all six sub-clusters of cases.

Poona Outbreak • FDA and state partners collected a total of 75 product samples which were analyzed by FDA and state laboratories. • All 14 product samples, which tested positive, were Salmonella Poona with a PFGE pattern and WGS matching the outbreak strain were sourced from Grower A of Mexico.

  8. S. Poona Outbreak • Whole genome sequencing analysis was conducted on Salmonella Poona isolates obtained from clinical cases and suspected cucumbers.

Poona Outbreak • Product Actions • Company A notified customers of a voluntary recall of all implicated cucumbers distributed from August 1, 2015 to September 03, 2015 • On 9/6/2015, a downstream distributor from California voluntarily recalled repackaged Company A recalled cucumber products • On 9/15/2015, the FDA issued Import Alert 99-23, Detention Without Physical Examination Of Raw Fresh Fruits And Vegetables Due To The Presence Of Pathogenic Contamination, for cucumbers from Grower A located in Mexico. The positive cucumber sample results were used to support this Import Alert • On 9/25/2015, Import Alert 99-35, Detention Without Physical Examination of fresh produce that appears to have been prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions, was updated to include Grower A. The positive product samples, case exposure information and regulatory traceback of case patient exposure were used as evidence to support this Import Alert.
