  1. Safeguarding& Child Protection Training Bi-Annual, Entire School TrainingAt Christ the Saviour, all staff, governors and parent volunteers take part in this training at least bi-annually. A certificate of participation is awarded and the date of most-recent training recorded on each employee’s file (or a separate register for parent volunteers). It is our policy to make sure that any other person involved with our school such as external caterers or agency staff also attend this training. Whilst we provide at least annual training or update training through our Inclusion Leader, we never permit this important training to be delivered without the expert knowledge and delivery of the Lead Safeguarding Officer from the Local Authority. The following slides are provided as a reminder of the training and do not substitute for the professional training provided by the Lead Safeguarding officer.

  3. Reduction in child deaths nationally since school and multi-agency training began. • 600 cases a year referred by schools in Ealing.But don’t know what we don’t know. NSPCC research - one in twenty could be affected! • School staff, teaching and importantly non-teaching, uniquely placed to spot possible abuse. • No other agency has a long term trusting, relationships with children and parents. • Disclosures, changes over time, physical evidence all able to come to staff’s notice.   4. Individual staff members are likely to come across cases in the course of their professional life. • Duty to refer possible abuse. We always refer to social services as a school – even if it is only for another professional opinion not to refer formally. • Inspection and Ofsted’s limiting judgement. • Government’s Every Child Matters agenda, Extended schools all emphasise the central role of schools in keeping children safe. At CtS, we provide a copy of this on the staff portal and sign-post on our school website. • A designated child protection teacher (Mrs Steadman). • The Headmaster and deputy heads are also equally qualified but always refer to the Designated Senior Person (DSP): Mrs Steadman. • Safer recruitment procedures • National requirement: Training for designated teacher (every 2 years) • Whole school and Governing Body (every 3 years).   7. We need to know how to distinguish between normal marks, behavioural changes and children in need from the early signs of abuse. • Children Act identifies significant harm in 4 areas. They may overlap:Physicalsexualemotional &neglect • Role of ethnicity, culture, social class and personal experience. What is child abuse

Trust gut feelings, get the wider picture, always consult. • Sexual abuse: disclosures, age inappropriate sexual knowledge • Neglect: hungry, wrong clothing, smelly. • Emotional: scapegoating, ‘low warmth high criticism’. Frozen child. • Physical: frequency, vulnerable areas of the body with marks, changing/different explanations, adults state of mind - drunk or drug abusing. Signs and Symptoms

Identify with the stresses • Making it worse? • Breaking up families (less that 1% of children referred are removed from home ) • Reprisals. Legal security, physical safety, • Too understanding!   12. Mostly very good. • Almost all children get an effective support package and come off the child protection register. • Less that 1 % removed from home. • Adults who were ill treated report that help was effective. Outcomes

Second Principle of the children act is “work co-operatively with parents” • Tell the parent about the referral unless it puts the child at risk • Decide with the social worker on who will say what and when to the parent • School has to talk to parent at some stage as usually a relationship will continue.
