Library Science 111: Introduction to Information Literacy in an Electronic Environment • Hybrid class • First time teaching this class in face-to-face • At Gadsden Education Center • Dual-Credit students • Computer Lab • Online actual exercises!
I had to add more curriculum because class normally taught in mini-semester format and online! • Wondered how well students understood concepts in L SC 111??? • Wanted something quick, easy, and technological…
Something that enabled Instructor-to-student instant communication; email! • Quick, effective, two way but most of all… • Shared learning
10 minute Writing/Thinking Exercises • Used for: • Recalling information • Requires critical thinking, where decisions and explanations take place. • Great to begin class!
Could also be used as: • Performance task exercise or skill practice (timed) • Assesses individual mastery of course & gen. ed. competencies in: Critical Thinking & Effective Communication
Examples of Prompts: • Find “good” information literacy website • Explain difference between subject/title/keyword searches on the library catalog • Explain difference between full-text limitations and searching w/I the full text of the article • Explain difference between scholarly and popular sources
Explain difference between a search engine and a Web directory Search for information on the Google/China ordeal (X2) What are the health benefits of eating green chile? Explain difference between an online version of source vs. digitally born content
Instruction Modification: • Counsel students individually and with additional resources and materials. • Email allows for paper trail and good bookkeeping. • Reinforces online learning (hybrid).
Future considerations: Use drawing or other non-writing outlet Video/audio recordings to be posted up on Blackboard Assign students sections of content to “teach” to class
