Density • Density is the amount of matter present in a given volume of a substance • it is an intrinsic property of a substance – i.e., no matter how big or small an object is, all objects of the same substance have the same density • Ex: a piece of copper the size of a house and a piece of copper the size of a marble both have the same density (8.96 g/mL to be exact)! • You can find densities of various substances in Table 2.8 on p. 44 of your text.
Density = mass/volume Ex: a student finds that 23.50 mL of a certain liquid weighs 35.062 g. It’s density is: Density = 35.062 g/23.50 mL Density = 1.492 g/mL
Practice What is the density of a medallion that has a mass of 55.64 g and a volume of 2.6 mL? Density = mass/volume Density = 55.64 g/ 2.6 mL = 21 g/mL
Practice What is the volume of an object that has a density of 25.4 g/mL and a mass of 3.26 g? Density = mass/volume Volume = mass/density Volume = 3.26 g / 25.4 g/mL = 0.128 mL
The Basics of Matter • Matter – is anything that has mass and takes up space – it is the “stuff” of which the universe is composed • The three states of matter: • Solid • Liquid • Gas
