Irony • Irony: The use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning. • Effect of device: In poetry, it is use to express sarcasm.
“Earth” by John Hall Wheelock • “Earth” is about a Martian’s narration of the explosion of Earth. He explains that the people living there must have been smart to have the technology to destroy Earth. This is ironic because they were foolish to blow up their home planet.
“Earth” by Oliver Herford • “Earth” by Oliver Herford is about a Martian child watching Earth fall through space and thinks of it as a shooting star. This is ironic because humans see shooting stars and we do not think much of it. For all we know it could be another planet falling through space like in this poem.
Quote of Device • “Earth”- “Intelligent beings must have been living there” • “Earth”- “See the pretty shooting star”
