Why use plastic? • Plastic in landfills can take over 1,000 years to break down. • About 35 Billion bottles are thrown away each year and settle in landfills. • Recycling plastic requires 88% less energy than making plastic from raw materials • 90% of the cost of a bottled beverage is from the cost of making the bottle • Only 25% of used bottles are recycled • If Americans recycled 100% of all bottles we would save 1 billion dollars in crude oil costs and reduce the size of future landfills
What goes into making a bottle? • Crude oil is typically used along with other harmful chemicals to make PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) a synthetic substance used to make plastic. • The amount of crude oil it takes to make a bottle is about ¼ the bottles volume • That’s 500 mL for a 2 Liter bottle
Why use wire coat hangers? • Every year the US imports clothes, and about 3.5 billion wire coat hangers • Only 10% end up being recycled • 88 thousand tons per year of coat hangers end up in landfills • Steel is typically used to make the hangers and steel can hold its own weight and more, making it a useful resource.
Dangers of Plastic and Coat Hangers • The need for crude oil in order to make bottles is in and of itself dangerous considering there are threats of oil spills and fossil fuels are limited • The substances used to make bottles can pollute runoff • Steel is a valuable resource that shouldn’t be wasted, and it doesn’t usually degrade • Bottles often end up in the ocean, and marine life may ingest them leading to harmful effects • Seeing bottles in nature isn't exactly aesthetically pleasing
The Product • We used: • 2 liter soda bottles • A wire coat hanger • Marigold Seeds • Dirt • It can be used as an indoor or outdoor flower pot • It would cost about $12.00 • After materials are gathered it costs under a dollar to make, and takes about 10 minutes to make alone, and well under 10 with more people
The product could be purchased at our website: www.drinkstopots.com • A customer could reduce the cost of the product by sending in the following items: • 1 Two liter bottle=25 cents off • 1 wire coat hanger=20 cents off • Both twine and soil would be bought through a local wholesale retailer
