How does God establish the Church in the Life and Death of Jesus Christ?
Jesus laid the foundations of the Church • Chose 12 Apostles to lead • Chose Peter to be his vicar (representative) on earth. (Mt. 16:17-18, Luke 22:31-32, John 21:15-19) • Peter in Greek is “Petra” which means rock. He is the rock on which the Church is built.
Jesus gave the Apostles firm teachings which were to be taught, passed on, and adhered to always. • Deposit of Faith: all the truths entrusted to the Apostles to pass on. ( Matthew 28:18-20, I Tim 1:18, 4:14-16)
By His death Jesus left the Church the deposit of grace, which is dispensed through the Sacraments of the Church. (CCC 766) • Deposit of Grace: graces of salvation merited for us on the cross. (1 Peter 1:18-21, 1 Cor. 11:23-29, Acts 2:42, James 5:13-15, John 20:21-23
This is how Christ established the Church on earth during his life, and through his death.
