CORES A Forum on Shared Metadata Vocabularies
Overview • CORES is an Accompanying Measure under the Semantic Web action line, running from April 2002 through June 2003 • It aims to serve the Community of metadata implementors, by both: • aiming to enhance interoperability between metadata solutions • providing registration of metadata schemas
Consortium • PricewaterhouseCoopers, Luxembourg (co-ordinator) • University of Bath, UKOLN, UK • Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Birlinghoven Library (FhG/WTI/WB), Germany • Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Computer and Automation Research Institute (MTA/SZTAKI), Hungary
Rationale • The Semantic Web needs interoperable metadata • Metadata standards and metadata registries are being developed in relative isolation • Standards developers and metadata registry initiatives need to work together to find strategic and technical ways forward to create long-term interoperability
Approach • CORES brings together major standardisation groups to discuss strategic directions • CORES brings together various international initiatives that are seeking to build registries which harvest and use vocabularies • CORES will build on SCHEMAS, which examined how implementers “mix and match” multiple standards in their local vocabularies and defined a model based on RDF
Metadata Interoperability Forum • Different metadata standards use different elements, grammars (data models) and encoding formats. • CORES will bring together key figures from major standardisation activities to discuss practicalities of cross-standard interoperability in a one-day high-level conference
Registry of Core Vocabularies and Profiles • CORES aims at promoting the dissemination and use of the SCHEMAS registration model by a critical mass of projects and services. • In order to track problems of interpretation and encoding as they arise, the project will hold a hands-on "profile-writing" workshop with implementers.
Outlook on FP6 • CORES also looks forward to FP6 by building a community that defines pathways for research and co-ordination activities in the future to ensure the success of the Semantic Web • FP6 should not only focus on Semantic Web research, but also put emphasis on creating an interoperable infrastructure from the beginning: Interoperability does not happen by accident!
