  2. Basic Facts Iceland is bigger than Ireland Iceland = 39000 sq. miles Ireland = 32000 sq miles Þjórsá (the longest river of Iceland, 230 km) Standing at 2,100m Mount Oraefajokull is the highest mountain in Iceland

  3. Iceland Geography and Geology Geographically half of Iceland is in America and half is in Europe, This is because the earths tectonic plates meet beneath Iceland.

  4. This is why Iceland has a lot of volcanic activity.

  5. The most recent volcanic eruption in Iceland was in April 2010when Mt Eyjafjallajökull erupted causing a lot of problems for the global airline industry. Aeroplanes could not fly for weeks because of due to the volcanic ash

  6. Advantages of Volcanic Activity But volcanic activity can have its advantages. The heat from beneath the ground heats thermal spa pools. This gives rise to having permanent heated swimming pools. Also the volcanic activity can be harnessed to produce energy, this is used to heat and provide electricity to all the homes and businesses in Iceland. No one in has electricity or heating bills.

  7. History and Politics • Iceland is a relatively new country. It was first settled by Irish and Scottish monks in about 500 AD. The monks were succeeded by Norse Vikings who settled there in the 8th century. • Now (2014) Iceland has a population of 320,000 people. IngólfrArnarson was one of the first permanent Norse settlers in Iceland

  9. economy Iceland used to be a very poor country but is now one of the most developed and wealthiest in today’s world. Its main industries are fishing (especially cod), technology and until the recent economic crash ... Banking.

  10. culture The general culture is Northern European sharing many traits with Scandanavian countries. The language of Iceland is Icelandic. The language is a very old form of Danish. The childrens programme ‘Lazy Town’ is made in Iceland Bjork is the country’s most famous singer Icelanders eat a lot of seafood and dried mutton delicacies such as SHEEPS HEAD!!!!
