Iceland Geography and Geology Geographically half of Iceland is in America and half is in Europe, This is because the earths tectonic plates meet beneath Iceland.
The most recent volcanic eruption in Iceland was in April 2010when Mt Eyjafjallajökull erupted causing a lot of problems for the global airline industry. Aeroplanes could not fly for weeks because of due to the volcanic ash
Advantages of Volcanic Activity But volcanic activity can have its advantages. The heat from beneath the ground heats thermal spa pools. This gives rise to having permanent heated swimming pools. Also the volcanic activity can be harnessed to produce energy, this is used to heat and provide electricity to all the homes and businesses in Iceland. No one in has electricity or heating bills.
History and Politics • Iceland is a relatively new country. It was first settled by Irish and Scottish monks in about 500 AD. The monks were succeeded by Norse Vikings who settled there in the 8th century. • Now (2014) Iceland has a population of 320,000 people.
