Master Your Modifiers • A Modifier is a word that describes another word in a sentence. • A modifier should always appear next to the word it describes. • If you misplace a modifier it can change the meaning of the sentence. Example: Incorrect: We saw a show about SpongeBob at the theater. Correct: At the theater, we saw a show about SpongeBob.

  3. Vary Your Sentences - Adverbs Rule: Add an adverb to the beginning of a sentence to add more description. -Petar kicked the ball down the field and scored! -Quickly, Petar kicked the ball down the field and scored!

  4. Vary Your Sentences • Rule- move a prepositional phrase to the beginning of the sentence. • Incorrect: I straighten my hair in the morning for school. • Correct: In the morning, I straighten my hair for school.

  5. Vary Your Sentences – Forming a Compound Sentence • To link two or more sentences together to for a compound sentence, use conjunctions. • The butterfly was pretty. It had pink wings. It had purple wings. It had blue wings. • The butterfly was pretty, it had pink, purple, and blue wings.

  6. Concept: Vary Your Sentences • Rule: Combine two or more sentences by placing a clause in the middle of one of the sentences • Incorrect Example: Emilio’s grandfather is going to the soccer game. He is a crazy soccer fan. • Correct Example: Emilio’s grandfather, who is a crazy soccer fan, is going to the soccer game.

Redundancy • It is important to avoid redundancy, or unnecessary repetition. • To avoid redundancy, do not repeat the action or adjective in the sentence. • Incorrect example: My family and I had dinner at 6p.m. in the evening • Corrected Example: My family and I had dinner at 6p.m. • 2nd Corrected Example: My family and I had dinner in the evening.

  8.
