Facilitators of Learning Organizations Source: David Garvin, Learning in Action, p. 42 • A broad base of contributors and data sources • A process for sharing diverse perspectives and points of view • A willingness to embrace contradictory, unexpected findings
Facilitators, continued • A process of conflict and debate that tests prevailing views • The provision of timely, accurate feedback • Incentives that encourage new approaches • The creation of space for learning • A sense of psychological safety
Success Analysis Protocol • This is one structured way to celebrate success • As always, enjoy the protocol AND consider its use-value to you back at school • Make a note on your master sheet
Success Analysis Protocol • Implement ideas and practices in your action plan • Re-group and CELEBRATE SUCCESS! • Re-visit your criteria and raise the bar for the next round
Leadership Connection • Modeling in the Classroom • Modeling in Leadership
Modeling in the Classroom • Teachers use modeling as an instructional technique • Examples: Think aloud, Cognitive mapping • Those who advocate this type of teaching suggest: • Being as explicit as possible about the transfer of the model to the student expectation • Model behavior AS CLOSE to the expected behavior as possible
Modeling in Leadership Jet Blue CEO David Neeleman • 2 days a month as bag checker and steward serves three purposes: • Able to stay in touch with the “end-user” • Able to model customer service and work ethic to employees • Develop trust and collegial culture at Jet Blue
In the spirit of modeling… We’re going to run a “Fishbowl Protocol”: • As a teaching team, we’ll discuss data from the End-of-Year survey. • As observers, please take notes on what you see.
How do you incorporate modeling into your teaching? • How effective is it? • What are some of the pitfalls that you've learned to avoid?
How do you incorporate modeling into your leadership? • What examples have you or other leaders you know used for modeling the behavior expected of teachers? • What obstacles do you encounter in trying to model the kinds of behavior you expect of teachers at your school?
