  1. Yanish Tucker The Third and Final Continentby JhumpaLahiri

  2. Plot • Story is based on JhumpaLahiri’s father’s immigration to Boston (USA) • He moves there after being offered a job at a library at MIT • He stays with a 103 year-old piano teacher (Mrs Croft) • His new wife (whom he married in India) joins him at a later date • He is not yet comfortable with his wife, but they begin to warm up to each other after visiting Mrs Croft

  3. Themes • Migration – the whole story is based on the experience of moving to another country • Adaptation – the narrator has to make changes to his lifestyle according to his new locations – first in England and then in the USA • Traditions – there is a conflict of cultures that the narrator has to learn to accep • Isolation – coming to a new country without knowing anyone is lonely

  4. Characters • The narrator – polite, thoughtful, caring, accepting, intelligent • Mrs Croft – boisterous, picky, traditional, physically very fragile • Mala – talented, shy and awkward at first, friendly once the narrator gets to know her • Helen – matter-of-fact, calm

  5. Genre • Written autobiographically (actually a biography) • Immigration • Traditions vs. changing societies

  6. Structure • Story has main 3 parts: • The narrator’s life before staying at Mrs Croft’s house • His life while at Mrs Croft’s house • His life after leaving Mrs Croft’s house • There is also a short conclusion of everything that has happened at the end

  7. Language • Often quite plain, no difficult vocabulary • Little imagery (one example is: “Age had battered he features so that she almost resembled a man.” – P.383) • Little emotive language (one example is: “I was mortified.” – P.389) • The relatively uncluttered language allows the reader to focus more on the events occurring

  8. Links with other short stories • “On Her Knees” also deals with society, although from a different perspective • “The Taste of Watermelon” is set in a new place for the narrator • “Meteor” also has the theme of with adapting to new and different surroundings • “There Will Come Soft Rains” is based on human progress • “The Yellow Wall Paper” also deals with isolation • “The Signalman” deals with isolation as well
