Part II Overview • Given two reading comp passages • Answer 5 multiple choice questions. • Write two short answer paragraphs. • One that discusses a controlling idea (theme) common to both passages. • One that discusses how a literary technique is used to develop one passage.
YOUR TASK TAKE THIS TIME TO READ BOTH PASSAGES. When you finish reading: • Answer the multiple choice questions 21-25 in your notebook. • Read questions 26 and 27.
PARAGRAPH 1 Write a well developed paragraph in which you use ideas from both passages to establish a controlling idea about relationships. Develop your idea using specific examples and details from each passage.
Things to remember: • Test will provide big issue • Controlling idea = theme • What point is made about the big issue the test provides? (RELATIONSHIPS in this case) • You must discuss BOTH passages • Specific details get you points. • Well-constructed paragraphs. • Topic sentence -- Supporting details -- Explanation of details
Sample: In passage one and two both authors made it clear that relationships can act as learning experiences. In passage one, Ezra learns a lot from his relationship with Mrs. Scarlatti. When Ezra brought Mrs. Scarlatti her favorite soup that they cooked together, he learned the importance of caring for those in need. In passage two, the father and son learn the importance of family through their relationship. Walking together reminds them of fond memories and makes them appreciate the closeness they share as family. Both passages show how relationships can be learning experiences.
Paragraph 2 Choose a specific literary technique or element used by ONE of the authors. Using specific details from that passage, in a well-developed paragraph, show how the author uses that element or technique to develop the passage.
Things to remember: • You must discuss literary technique AND aneffect it creates. • You only discuss ONE passage. • Specific details get you points • Connect technique and effect • Well-constructed paragraphs. • Topic sentence -- Supporting details -- Explanation of details
Sample: In passage two, the author uses imagery to give the reader a better picture of the father and son walking together. For example the moon is described as “a golden apple sliced in half”. This gives the reader a good picture of the father and son walking together. It also gives a good description of the flowers looking like stars. All of the imagery used by the author gives a clear and vivid picture of what the father and son are seeing as they stand in the meadow.
HELPFUL LITERARY TECHNIQUES • Imagery • Language that appeals to one of the five senses. Example: The hot sunny day made my test paper feel damp and smell musty. What senses are being appealed to in this sentence?
