  1. Birth of the Bad and the Good James 1:12-18

  2. This passage helps us with dealing with temptation • A promise to those who endure temptation • A caution not to wrongfully attribute blame for those temptation • An understanding of how sin develops

  3. I. The Promise (v 12) • The man who will endure temptation will be “blessed”… • Maka, rioj – happy, fortunate, blessed • …for after he has been “proved” he will receive “the crown of life.” • The promise is that of "eternal life" • The promise is given by Him Who cannot lie - cf. Titus 1:2 • The promise is given to those who "demonstrate" (prove) their love for God by their endurance of the temptations

  4. II. The Caution (v 13, 16-18) • Let no one say they are tempted by God (13) • God is HOLY • Knowing God’s character is vital to a thriving Christian life • So don’t be deceived into such thinking (16-18) • God is the source of good, not evil • Every good and perfect gift comes from Him! • It was of God’s own will that He brought us into a relationship with Himself

  5. III. The Understanding (14-15) • How sin develops… • The first stage is TEMPTATION (v 14) This stage involves two things: • Lust – a strong DESIRE for something • Enticement – an OPPORTUNITY and encouragement to satisfy the desire Temptation = Desire + Opportunity

  6. Case study: A boy and the cookie jar A boy is TEMPTED to steal some cookies when He WANTS them (desire) and He has a chance to get them and not be seen (opportunity) Desire + Opportunity = Temptation *But remember, it is not a sin to be tempted (Heb 4:15)

  7. III. The Understanding (14-15) • How sin develops… • The first stage is TEMPTATION (v 14) • The second stage of development of sin is SIN ITSELF (15) • Temptation leads to sin only when you yield and ACT upon it • Sin therefore requires the added step of ACTION Sin = Desire + Opportunity + Action

  8. III. The Understanding (14-15) • How sin develops… • The first stage is TEMPTATION (v 14) • The second stage of development of sin is SIN ITSELF (15) • The third stage is the consequences of unforgiven sin: DEATH (15) • Spiritual separation from God, Romans 6:23 b) Involves eternal punishment, Rev 21:8 Sin + No Forgiveness = Punishment!

  9. III. The Understanding (14-15) • How to overcome sin • Change our “desires” • The WORD OF GOD is instrumental in helping us overcome sin (Psalm 101:11, Mt 4:3-10) • As we read about God’s character, the more we desire to serve Him • As we read about sin and its consequences, the more we come to hate it Sin = Desire + Opportunity + Action

  10. III. The Understanding (14-15) • How to overcome sin • Change our “desires” • Limit our “opportunities” • This can be done by ASKING FOR GOD’S PROVIDENTIAL HELP (Mt 6:13; 26:41) • Avoid situations that might excite wrong desires • Avoid those whose evil behavior encourages us to sin with them Sin = Desire + Opportunity + Action

  11. Exercise “self-control” • Self-control is but one aspect of the “fruit of the Spirit” (Gal 5:22-23) • We receive the gift of the HOLY SPIRIT in our lives as Christians (Acts 2:39; 5:32) • The Spirit is God’s instrumental agent by which he imparts strength to us (Eph 3:16) • Strengthened by the Spirit, we can “put to death the deeds of the body” (Ro 8:12-13) • “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Phil 4:13) Sin = Desire + Opportunity + Action

  12. III. The Understanding (14-15) • How to overcome sin • Change our “desires” • Limit our “opportunities” • Exercise “self-control” • Obtain “forgiveness” • Through THE BLOOD OF CHRIST, we can avoid punishment and thereby still overcome sin! (1 Jn 2:1-2) • REPENT, PRAY, and CONFESS Sin + No Forgiveness = Punishment!

  13. Conclusion: At each of the four points in the develop-ment of sin, God is able and willing to help us overcome sin! • God helps us to "control our desires" by providing His WORD to renew our minds • God helps us to "limit the opportunities" through His PROVIDENCE as we pray for such • God helps us to "exercise self-control" over our actions through His SPIRIT strengthening the inner self • God helps us to "obtain forgiveness" through THE BLOOD OF JESUS as we repent and pray
