  2. Process Analysis • Analyzes a process by: • Breaking it into steps, stages, or phases • Sometimes explains process’s causes and effects.

  3. Reading Process Analysis • Authors break a process into clear series of steps • Will often explain and analyze the process • Explain how and why steps lead to a specific outcome. • Often uses cause – effect reasoning

  4. Reading Process Analysis • Consider rhetorical situation: • Depending on purpose, audience, and topic, usually takes 1 of 2 forms • Essay that describes and analyzes nature and function of a process (Photosynthesis, Mitosis) • Set of instructions telling reader exactly how to do something (Software installation, model assembly)

  5. Reading Process Analysis • Purpose: If intent is to explain the topic, write an essay • first gives overview of process • then explains how each step leads logically to the next, and how all steps together complete the process

  6. Reading Process Analysis • Purpose: • To help reader do something - • Write instructions • List of materials • Detailed list of directives

  7. Reading Process Analysis • Audience • Text should meet needs of all readers • Includes those with least knowledge • Include all information readers need • Use language readers understand • Define unfamiliar or technical terms

  8. Reading Process Analysis • Topic: • Academic writing • Usually course-related and interests writer • Offers readers insight into the discipline • In professional publications – should interest and educate the audience

Reading Process Analysis • Reader’s Checklist • Does essay clearly identify process, outline stages, explain steps, and (if necessary) discuss causes and effects? • Do instructions clearly and accurately explain process, tools and parts needed, steps required, and necessary precautions? • Does document use clear, precise language and define unfamiliar terms?
