Faith Based Righteousness Philippians 3:9
(Isa 64:6) For all of us have become like one who is unclean, And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; And all of us wither like a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, take us away (Psa 119:40) Behold, I long for Your precepts; Revive me through Your righteousness
The Meaning Of Righteousness • What is right; justice; the act of doing what is in agreement with God's standards; the state of being in a proper relationship with God • Thayer says: • In a broad sense: state of him who is as he ought to be, righteousness, the conditions acceptable to God • <more specific> The doctrine concerning the way in which man may attain a state of approval
The gospel reveals this standard (Rom. 1:16-17; 2 Tim. 3:16-17) • It has been made possible through Jesus Christ (Rom. 4:25; 5:18)
Our Righteousness Must Exceed The Scribes And The Pharisees • One of the most radical things ever said by Jesus (Matt. 5:20) • The Scribes and Pharisees were viewed as the epitome of righteousness • However, they were NOT the standard! • Note: Maybe we need to break from some supposed standards today
What was wrong with the righteousness of the Scribes and Pharisees? (Matt. 23). • "Say and do not" (Matt. 23:1-4). • "Neglected part of God's law" (Matt. 23:23-24). • "Appeared holy, but were corrupt" (Matt. 23:27-28). • Simply put: Disciples of Jesus are called to a higher standard - - the standard revealed by God (Rom. 1:16-17)
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “but the righteous man shall live by faith
Seeking His Righteousness • Hungering and thirsting (Matt. 5:6) • “His righteousness” (Matt. 6:33)
Doing His Righteousness • 1 John 3:7 tells us this is possible AND necessary • Romans 10:1-4 gives us some insight on this: • Some want a convenient righteousness (3a) • Must be subject to God's righteousness (3b) • The whole law pointed to Jesus (4) • His gospel reveals His righteousness (Titus 2:11-14)
