What is Hrudaya Basti? The word hridaya means “heart” that receives the deoxygenated blood and as an outcome delivers the oxygenated blood to all the organs of the body while Basti means “to hold the herbal decoction or medicated oil on the focused area i.e over hridaya.” Hence the procedure of holding the medicated oil over the hridaya (cardiac region) is designated as hridya basti. It is also designated as the uro basti as it is present in uro pradesh i.e chest region. Hridaya basti is just similar to all the other basti’s of panchakarma as discussed earlier but in this therapy a little bit more attention is required because the heart is a very significant organ as in Ayurveda it is baptized as the site of prana. Procedure: The patient would be made to lie on the treatment table, on his back and is instructed to close his/her eyes and start concentrating on the inhalation and exhalation of the air. A leak-proof mould, made up of black Gram dough, is fixed over the heart region, of the chest surface. A lukewarm herbal medicated oil prescribed by the Ayurvedic doctor is slowly poured into that mould and let stay. The temperature is maintained by replacing the oil in the mould with warm oil at intervals. After the procedure, the mould is removed and the chest region is massaged gently for the better absorption of the medicine. The treatment duration varies from person to person. This treatment provides relief from pain in the chest region, strengthens chest muscles and pacifies Vata Dosha. It also helps to remove the negative emotions such as unresolved anger, frustration and sadness.
