Problem: Youth Unemployment and Increasing population compared to slower growth of employment. • Severity: Critical on long term. • Situation in Turkey: High brain drain, 9.4 %Unemployment, Questionably qualified workers. • Thoughts of affected: If you want to be a honest, succesful worker, you better look elsewhere. • Brain Drain: http://www.erc.metu.edu.tr/menu/series07/0701.pdf http://www.burslu.org/devrim/BrainDrain.pdf • Reasons: many, including: Prestige, Higher chance of employment in desired job, green card advantages, better environment.
Sources of the problem Education: • Theory focused, unrealistic education • No thought besides on lessons is allowed and value of student decided by a arbitrary grade • Constant curiculum change which do not adress any problems • “Give formula then solve questions” style education
Cultural sources: • Human value being decided by wage • Extreme pressures such as “Be the best student or marry someone rich” mentality • Young workers are seen as useless (hence "i need experience for a job and for experience i need a job "cycle ) • “Dignity” Young people don’t want to start from bottom, they think because they graduated they deserve to be CEO • Young people are not aware of the jobs available.
Economical sources: • Global economical situation makes people insecure about their jobs. • Local government does not exploit their own assests and waits to bureaucracy to sort things out. • In Turkey and in most Eastern Europe countries government isn’t backing up the small investors instead increases taxes on what they need to operate (such as gasoline). • Insufficient subsidies and not enough announcement of such subsidies.
Solution Guidelines Education: • Change should start with teachers aka teacher schools not from grade 1 • Practicality focused methods shall be used such as experiments, observations etc. • The first thing for students to learn should be scientific methodology and observation thus they will know how to educate themselves • There must be discussion sessions on the subjects instead of teaching them same things for years. • Application sessions instead of theory sessions • Students should be given environment to use recently acquired knowledge instead of throwing more information.
Point in education will not be “Throw everything at them with no context” and instead will be slow but steady so we will focus on wisdom instead of empty knowledge • After the primary school students should already know and understand what they wish to do in life and how to contribute, minimising people who learn science but have nothing to do with it. • To compensate for reduced information input students will be tought, how to search after all we have books & internet. • Education should make students realise their talents and work on that instead of assuming everyone is equal. • Grades should be made obselete over time and replaced with performance reports. Easing the job of parent, student, teacher, employer.
Cultural & Economical : • We need to make young people more aware of employment offices and perhaps a site where ALL employers post jobs instead of spreading them everywhere. • Outside of school people should be made aware of current job market for people with their skills and it should be encouraged to be used as early as possible so we won’t have people in high school with no idea what they want to or can do. • Instead of discussing topics which everyone forgets about , how about we start creating an image of a government which cares for the economy after all setting an image doesn’t cost much but accomplishes much. • Tax cuts for the small-middle businesses on income, gasoline.Heavy monitoring should be implemented and harsh monetary punishements should be issued to prevent exploitation.
Short Term Executable Solutions • Education investments can be optimised and tracked to increase performance/Euro and reduce corruption in the public schools • Curriculum should always go from foundament to advanced and practicality should be encouraged with project assignements, presentations. • A collective site where emloyers can post the wanted employees in one place so unemployed people can search there. • Volunteer jobs should also be in that site and it should be noted that volunteer jobs count as experience. • Encourage children to choose an area of interest in primary school and state of the job market for their interest should be explained before it is too late. • Instead of discussing topics which everyone forgets about , how about we start creating an image of a government which cares for the economy after all setting an image doesn’t cost much but accomplishes much.
Planned Results Short Term: • Noticable increase in employment among youth. • Resistance against the new education principles from conservative front, companies who benefit from ignorant consumer base. Long Term: • Increased worker quality. • Increased economic potential. • Increased Actual literacy rate. Engagement: • Time spending:Full theoratical implementation will require over 200 hours. • Young unemployed reach:Depending on implementation of employment office approx. %80. • Affected youth:Education policies affect ALL the students country wide.
