30-Mile Radius Model • Denton 9 miles to Krum • Denton 33 miles to Gainesville • Krum Ridership = 12,186 • Similar to Norman = 12,573 • 5% Greater Overall Flyer Ridership due to population • Rapidly growing area • Used 2000 Census data Adapted from a Texas Transportation Institute Heartland Flyer Study by the Passenger Rail Oklahoma Organization
Timeline • 2007-2008 Requests for Stop begin in 2007-2008 from: • Mayors of North Richland Hills, Denton, and Krum • Denton County Judge • Chair of the Regional Transportation Council • March 12, 2009 Request for a Krum Station Study • April 1, 2009 Amtrak Responds to Requests/ seeks ODOT Comment • August 5, 2010 Amtrak Support Letter for FRA HSIPR Grant to TxDOT • August 6, 2010 BNSF Railway Support Letter • August 31, 2010 Krum, Denton, Denton County Letter to TxDOT: • Confirmation of Amtrak Support • Request for TxDOT involvement with KDOT Service Development Plan (SDP)
Current Status • TxDOT has requested HSIPR Federal Funding for Krum Station Study. • FY-2011 HSIPR Awards to be announced later this month. • $35,000 Matching funds provided from Krum Economic Development Committee.
At Stake… • From a 2010 Texas Transportation Institute Study: • Using Federal Fiscal Year 2009 passenger data, researchers estimated: • 39,000 vehicle-trips would be added to parallel roadways if the Heartland Flyer did not exist. • Passengers spent $18 million for lodging, meals, shopping, and entertainment • This $18 million resulted in nearly $1.4 million in sales tax revenue to communities served by the Heartland Flyer.
Other Discussion Points… • Denton County population continues to grow at a rapid rate, increasing the need for multi-modal transportation. • TxDOT received FRA HSIPR grant approval in January for $4 million in track improvements on the Fort Worth – Oklahoma state line BNSF Railway route. This route hosts the Heartland Flyer. • Speed will increase over the Texas segment from 60MPH to 79MPH once improvements are complete. • Forecasts indicate a 10% sales tax increase in the first year of a Krum stop operation. • The station stop would provide an economic boost for downtown Krum merchants translating into economic growth.
