  2. Cause of Rabies Rabies is a viral disease that causes inflammation in the brain. It is transmitted by animals, most of the time by a bite from an infected animal. For a human, rabies can be fatal if you don’t get proper treatment immediately. The rabies virus infects the central nervous system, causing disease in the brain, and also causing death. Rabies is mostly carried by bats, infected dogs and raccoons.

  3. Symptoms and Signs The period between infection and the first flu like symptoms is normally 2 to 12 weeks however can be as long as two years. Soon after the symptoms will expand to a slight or partial paralysis, anxiety, insomnia, confusion, terror and abnormal behavior. It becomes hard to speak and swallow because the throat and jaw become paralyzed.

  4. Treatment And fighting illness Post- exposure treatment for rabies consists of a regimen of one dose of rabies immune globulin and five doses of the rabies vaccine over a 28 day period. Doctors administer the rabies immune globulin and the first dose of the vaccine as soon as possible after exposure. Normally, additional doses of rabies vaccine follow on days 3, 7, 14 and 28 after the first vaccination. Rabies immune globulin contains antibodies from blood donors who were giving rabies vaccinations.

  5. Prevention • Vaccinate your pets from rabies • Keep your pets under supervision • Do not handle wild animals or strays • Washing your hands within ten minutes of being bitten by an animal. • Contact a healthcare provider if bitten to see if you need post exposure prophyalxi.

  6. Fact Rabies is a big problem in the developing world. Its estimated 55,000 people every year, mostly children, die from rabies. It also affects animals and livestock.
