About Sarah Grimke • Works • An Epistle to the Clergy of the Southern States (1836) • Sarah and her sister Angela went on a tour to Northern Churches and preached against slavery and supported the Women’s Rights Movement. • Wrote the Letters on the Equality of the Sexes • Quotation • “I ask no favors for my sex, I surrender not our claim to equality.  All I ask of our brethren is that they will take their feet from off our necks, and permit us to stand upright on the ground which God has designed us to occupy.” – Sarah Grimke • Significance • Sarah Grimke followed in her sister’s footsteps and became an anti-slavery activist. Like her sister, Sarah wrote pamphlets and letters supporting her view on slavery as well as her support for the Women’s Rights Movement. She later gave speeches supporting Abraham Lincoln during his campaign. Sarah is significant because she encouraged people all over the nation to turn towards abolitionism. Her writings helped pave the way for women to gain equality in education and in voting.
