Who were the Troubadours • The Troubadours were aristocratic poet musicians. • They lived mainly in the south of France from the end of the 11th century through the 13th century. • Many were noblemen and crusader knight; and some were kings.
More about Troubadours • Troubadours were originally travelling musicians. • Early troubadours travelled from village to village. • They sang songs about chivalry and courtly love. • They also told stories about far away lands.
Famous Troubadours • Later in history troubadours were part of the royalty and nobles. • Troubadours were singing all over Europe. • Some famous troubadours were the king of Navarre, the king of Spain and King Richard the Lionheart of England.
The Jongleurs • Jongleurs were of lower birth. • They performed the troubadours works and sometimes assisted. • They were skilled in playing musical instruments; they also danced, sang, juggled’ and were able to tell stories. • They lived in France and England.
Trouveres • They were medieval poet-musicians of central and Northern France. • Trouveres imitated the troubadours of the South. • Their songs included love lyrics, romances, and the heroic chansons de geste.
Minnesingers • Minnesingers were mediaeval German knights, poets, and singers of courtly love. • First they imitated Provencal troubadours, but developed their own style in the 13th and 14th century. • Famous minnesingers included Heinrich von Morungen, Walther von derVogelweide, and Oswald von Wolkenstein.
