Health • 23% of population has access to safe water, and 12% have access to sanitation, thereby increasing number of diseases • Malnutrition caused by food scarcity and the tradition that women reduce food allowance for men and children
Education • War has destroyed the educational system and increased the illiteracy rate. • Only 5% of women are able to read and write. • During Taliban rule, only 3% received some form of primary education.
Marriage • 54% of girls under the age of 18 are married. • Often forced to marry members of the Taliban or required to give large sums of money instead.
Limited Movement • Could only travel when accompanied by male relative. • May 2001, decree by the Taliban banned women from driving cars. • Could not play any role in politics.
