Polar Cardio GX System Randall Sell, Salem High School Planning Stage-Purpose Statement Data-Cont. • Enhance awareness of fitness and its components through the integration of heart rate monitors in physical education • Promote fitness knowledge through awareness of what to do to “stay in the zone” • Provide student and teacher proof of effort and individual progress • Help students stay motivated in and out of the classroom • NASPE standards addressed: • Standard 3: Participates regularly In physical activity • Standard 4: Achieves and maintains a health- enhancing level of fitness • Graphical summaries of sessions including time in heart rate zones, maximum and average heart rate during the session will be viewed and recorded by students using a personal data recording sheet • At the end of each six weeks students will be required to track their data and write a reflection based upon their results Results Stage - Evaluation • Salem High School • 9th grade class consisting of 30 students • Study will take place over 3 six week periods or semester • Limited knowledge and / or use of heart rate monitors among students • Recording sheets will be used to track how much time individual students spent “in the zone” during initial implementation of program • Progress will be tracked throughout semester and comparisons will be made on how much time was spent “in the zone” from the beginning of the semester till the end, thus, tracking their physical fitness level • Journal reflections will be used by students to demonstrate their understanding of different components of fitness and how they affect their HR and their time “in the zone” • Results will be reported to the students instantly through the Cardio GX system and through results of recording sheets throughout the semester. • Results will be reported to teachers through the student recording sheets and through student journal entries • Results will be reported to parents and other stakeholders through a combination of the two: recording sheets and journal entries Planning Stage- Settings and Participants Action Stage- Project Overview • Initially, students are instructed on the use and capabilities of heart rate monitors for 5 instructional days • During the first 5 days students will be given opportunities to explore the technology and concepts in a controlled setting • Students will then be required to wear the heart rate monitors twice a week for the entire semester • HR monitors will be used one day a week in the fitness room and the other day in the gymnasium using a variety of activities Results Stage- Discussions/Conclusions • I want 90% of the students to show an improvement in the amount of time “in the zone” from the beginning of the semester till the end, thus, showing an enhanced level of physical fitness • I want students to be able to use at least 7 of the terms associated with fitness that were discussed in class in respect to their HR and staying “in the zone” in their final journal • I would further like to investigate whether or not the instant feedback the technology provides enhances student motivation in the class as well as out of the classroom Action Stage- Data Collection Recommendations for Future Use • The students will be able to see their heart rates projected on the wall while they perform the activities giving them instant feedback on how the activity is effecting their body and to what level • 90% improvement rate takes into account for system errors and any other unforeseeable issues that may arise (i.e. student illness and / or injury) • Grades may be attached with whether or not students were “in the zone,” but not for this study because I didn’t want to attach a possible negative reinforcement with the activity
