Chemistry is a Physical Science Questions
Define chemistry. Chemistry is the study of the composition, structure, and properties of matter, the processes that matter undergoes, and the energy changes that accompany these processes.
What are the six branches of chemistry? Organic chemistry, Inorganic chemistry, Physical chemistry, Analytical chemistry, Biochemistry, and Theoretical chemistry.
What is studied in Organic Chemistry? Carbon-containing compounds. What is studied in Inorganic chemistry? Non-organic compounds, many of which will have organic fragments bonded to metals (organometallics).
What is studied in Physical chemistry? Properties and changes of matter and their relation to energy. What is studied in Analytical chemistry? The identification of the components and composition of materials.
What is studied in Biochemistry? Substances and processes occurring in living things. What is studied in Theoretical chemistry? The use of mathematics and computers to understand the principles behind observed chemical behavior and to design and predict the properties of new compounds.
Write the definition of a chemical. A chemical is any substance that has a definite composition. Why is “Basic Research” conducted? Basic research is carried out for the sake of increasing knowledge, such as how and why a specific reaction occurs and what the properties of a substance are.
Describe the purpose of “Applied Research”. Applied research is generally conducted to solve a problem. List an example of applied research. The development of new refrigerants that do not damage the atmosphere.
State the function of “Technological Development”. Technological development typically involves the production and use of products that improve the quality of our life. Name examples of products from technological development. Examples include computers, catalytic converters for cars, and biodegradable materials.
