  1. Enterotube See pages 56 & 57 in your Lab Atlas.

  2. Enterotube Gas production:Wax separates from agar OR air bubbles in agar

  3. Enterotube Indole test:

  4. Enterotube Indole test: 1. Melt film on bottom of compartment. 2. Add 2 drops Indole reagent. (on back table)3. Wait 10 sec. red = positive

  5. Enterotube Phenylalanine test

  6. Enterotube VP test: OMIT

  7. Enterotube Understanding the Enterotube interpretation table

  8. Enterotube The numbers on the Interpretation Chart represent the % of strains of that organism that show a positive result. ≥ 90% positive ≥ 10% but ≤ 90% test UNRELIABLE for this organism ≤ 10% negative

  9. Redundancy of tests e.g. The ability to ferment lactose is tested in: • Brilliant green agar • EMB agar • Enterotube If you are suspicious about the results of lactose fermentation test in the EMB plate, check lactose fermentation in the Brilliant green agar plate and in the Enterotube.

  10. Levine Eosin-Methylene Blue (EMB) Agar Lactose fermenter (high acid producer: black colonies) Non-lactose fermenter Gram positive(growth inhibited) Lactose fermenter (low acid producer: pink colonies)

  11. Brilliant Green Agar Lactose fermenter Non-lactose fermenter E. coli Salmonella
