I am element He • My discoverer is Pierre Janssen in 1868 • I am found in group 18, period 1 • My atomic number is 2 • I have: • 2 protons • 2 neutrons • 2 electrons
I’m used in NASA’s space shuttle to help it into space • Helium is found when Thorium and Uranium isotopes decay • I’m used in the process of heat treating • I am used in: • The filling of blimps • Supersonic windtunnels • Welding • Pressurizing liquid fuel rockets • Low temperature cooling systems
Properties • Physical • Boiling point: • -268.6 C/ -451.48 F • Melting point: • -272 C/ -457.6 F • Density: 0. 1785 g/ml • Chemical • Noble gas • Does not react with other elements • Two valence electrons • Very stable
Facts • I am non toxic • I don’t burn • I do not exist in the human body • I was discovered in the Suns atmosphere before I was discovered on Earth
Facts • The world production is 30,000 metric tons a year • 3,000 of those metric tons come from the decay of thorium and uranium • I am the second most abundant element in the universe • In 1929 helium became available on the open market
Facts • I am so light that Earth’s gravity is not strong enough to hold onto me • I am one of the two elements that have never been observed forming compounds\ • I was originally thought to be a metal • I am used to treat asthma
Facts • I am lighter than air • I never freeze • I have the lowest melting point of all the elements • I am colorless, odorless and tasteless • I have 8 isotopes
Facts • I am slightly heavier than hydrogen • I am used in MRI technology and in breathing assistance for premature infants • The United States contols 30% of the worlds helium supply • It is expected to run out by 2018
What happens when you breathe me in? • The vibration of the vocal chords is independent on the gas that surrounds them • The velocity of the sound waves is faster in helium and wavelengths greater, the frequency doesn’t change. • But the timbre or quality of the sound changes • It is this lesser density of helium flowing through the larynx that produces this differing quality in the voice
