Introduction • E-passport is also known as biometric passport. • To authenticate the Passport holder.
Introduction • E-passport uses contactless smart card technology, microprocessor chip and antenna which is normally embedded in the front or back cover of the e-passport. • Chip contains the same information that is printed in data page as well. (name, date of birth and other biographic info) • These days we use facial recognition, fingerprint recognition and iris recognition for e-passport identification system. We only use digital image of biometric feature which is stored in the chip. • ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) decides the standard of e-passport.
Why ePassport Problems with Paper/Normal passports: • It doesn’t provide privacy, identity can be revealed to anyone who can physically access the passport. • Passport can be used by someone else and identity can be theft. • Data can be modified on the passport as everything is accessible and readable. • It can be duplicated.
Why ePassport Benefits Of ePassport: • Travelers can be securely identified. • Identity theft can be checked. • protect privacy. • It is almost impossible to subvert the information.

Conclusion • Different countries have adopted different technical combinations in their e-passports to prevent attacks. • By using RFID, the whole system gains a lot of security norms, but it still needs to be developed in order to solve various security issues. • Further improvements in the security of e-passport private data and the process of communication should be done.
