The NFL Also known as the National Football League, it attracts millions of fans and viewers across the nation. It is made up of 32 different football teams, yielding from multiple states and cities. There are 16 teams and 16 that make that make up the up the NFC AFC (American (National Football Football Conference). Conference)
The NFL, the National Football League, is an American Institution that attracts millions all over the nation.
A Little History • The NFL was officially formed on June 24, 1922. • It was born from the American Professional Football Association, that was made on September 17, 1920, with 10 teams from four different states. • The Chicago Bears and the Arizona Cardinals are the only 2 teams that are founding members from the APFA.
The NFL is the reigning spectator sport in the United States, but has had some major bumps along the way. Racism Strikes NFL stopped signing black players in 1927 but reintegrated following World War II. It is currently 67-71% non-white, with many different races involved. 1974 and 1982 were the two major strikes. When a strike would happen, anybody would be able to participate in a try out to fill in for the players protesting until the strike had ended. Fun Fact: My father almost tried out for the Buffalo Bills during the 1982 strike, but ended up deciding against it.
NFL Today The NFL serves as an important part of American culture. This is because the Super Bowl, the ultimate game of the NFL season, is an unofficial American holiday and is almost always the top-rated television program. The play offs begin halfway through the season. Teams within the AFC play each other, and teams from the NFC play each other. Once a team loses, they are eliminated and disqualified from being eligible to play in the Super Bowl. The winner of the AFC and the winner of the NFC play each other for the Super Bowl. For the half time show, a featured performer puts on a huge, fantastical show, and the Super Bowl is also known for its hilarious commercials played during the breaks.

NFL games are playing all day Sunday, and all evening Mondays, called Monday Night Football. Games also take place on Thanksgiving. Fun Fact: My personal favorite team is the Green Bay Packers, and my favorite player is Brett Farve, who recently retired from being the Packers’ quarterback.
The Rules! There are many, confusing rules to America’s favorite sport. • Series of “downs”: individual plays • Offense gets 4 downs to progress to the goal line where they score a touch down. • If they do not cross the yellow line you see on TV, the “first down” line, during the 4th down they must punt (kick) the ball to the other team. • There are three parts of a football team • 1)Offense • 2) Defense • 3) Special Teams • The quarterback is the player who calls the play and throws the football. • Every touchdown is worth 6 points. • After the touchdown, the offensive team has the option to either kick a field goal, worth 1 point, or to complete the play in the goal line, which would be worth 2 points but is much trickier.
Why I Love Sports as an American Institution • It brings families together, and it brings our nation together. I have always valued sports as an important part of American culture because being as diverse as the United States is, sports allow individuals to forget their differences and come together to route for one another and show support for a team, as a team. • There is no other feeling of home than relaxing with my family watching football all Sunday afternoon long, or having hotdogs at a baseball game with my dad and brother.
