Types of Designs Designs are forms/images generated from our abstract mental picture
There are 3 basic types of Designs: • Abstract Designs has no direct relation to functionality or the object of fulfilling physical need. They are made mainly to evoke intellectual curiosity. They apply the elements and principles of design in unique ways to create visual interest. An example of Abstract designs are found in the Art. For example:

2. Aesthetic Design Aesthetic Designs apply the principle of form, proportion, colour and texture to make to an object visually appealing. These types of designs are purely to improve appearance. It is more to express decorations than functionality. For example, the outside skin of a car is made to create aesthetic appearance and has no bearing on its operation/ functionality.
3. Functional Design Functional Design – this design focuses purely on how an object operates. It does not have regard on how its looks aesthetically (decorative) or its artistry. One of the greatest American architects of the 19th century, Louis Sullivan based his designs on functional design concept. His motto which he coined: “Forms follow function” instructed that how a building looks from outside should be determined by internal spatial functionality and not mainly by aesthetics or application of artistry. For example, the external appearance of a car should not have any major impact on the form and shape of the engine or its operational performance.
