Horse Breeds • Quarter Horse: working ranch horse • AQHA: largest horse breed assoc. in U.S. • fast sprinter (1/4 mile) = quarter horse • first breed developed in U.S. (1600’s) • most heavily muscled light horse • 14-16 hands tall at withers • Hand = 4”
Horse Breeds • Thoroughbred: horse shows & racing • faster at longer distances (1/4 - 2 miles) • jumping & hunting competitions • 15-17 hands tall
Horse Breeds • Morgan • parade, hunting, jumping, showing.
Horse Breeds • Arabian: oldest recorded breed • endurance, heat tolerant • known for good looks • 14-15 hands tall
Color Breeds • Paint • Large patches of white with brown, black or combination of the three. • Palomino • Light tan to golden color with flaxen mane and tail. • Appaloosa • Mixture of white with any other color to create a pattern of spots. Mottled.
Draft Horses • Used mainly for work. • Before the invention of today's machinery • Now commonly used for pleasure riding and showing. • Also used for advertisements • Budweiser
Ponies • Used for: • Pleasure riding • Showing • Pulling buggies • Also, some breeds are good for children.
Miniature horses • Can be used as a guide for the blind. • Helping Hooves • Usually weigh between 55 and 100lbs. • Not a recognized breed. • Used for showing and companionship. • Too small to be ridden.
Horse Care • Nutrition: will eat 1 1/2 - 3% of body wt daily • Small, frequent amounts. • 10-12 gallons of water / day • hays, grains, supplements • 4 parts roughage to 1 part concentrate • more grain if horse is working
Horse Care • Mares more likely to conceive in spring • Health: colic (abdominal pain) & broken bones most serious • Vaccinate annually • Worm regularly: at least twice / year • Average cost to keep a horse for one year = $1000
