SS 1 VISUAL ART 2 TOPIC : ELEMENTS AND BASIC PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN Elements of art are the materials needed to achieve beautiful designs, while basic principles are the needed methods of carrying it out. ELEMENTS OF DESIGN: 1.Line : It is a vital element in design.Some are bold,thin,fragile,broken.It could be used to create texture in design. (a) ____________ Straight (structural line) (b) Rhythm line (c) - - - - - - - - - - - - Broken line 2. Texture : Is the surface quality of the design.There are two types of texture. (a) visual texture: It could be seen but could not be felt. (b) tactile texture: It is on three dimensional design unlike visual that is on two dimensional.It could be felt.

  2. 3.Space : It is an integral part of other elements such as line,colour and texture.The space in a background may enclose a shape in the design. 4. Shape /Motif : Motif is a form of shape,repeated several times to form a design.It could be created from natural or abstracted shapes. PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN : Are the guides that expands creativty in our design.These principles include : 1. Balance : Is the stability of a design.We have symmetrical,asymmetrical and radial balance. 2. Unity / Harmony : Is the quality of oneness in the overall assessment of a design. 3. Contrast /Harmony : Contrast could be used to create or modify form,express feelings and provide balance.

  3. 4. Proportion : It refers to the distribution and relationship of various elements in our design in such a way that we are able to avoid monotony or unguided variety. ASSIGNMENT : 1. What are elements of art? 2. Define the following : (a)Motif (b)Proportion (c) Contrast
