TWITTER’S ‘HIDINGSELECTED TWEETREPLIES’ FEATURE: IsitUsefulorHarmful?
You are scrolling in your twitter timeline, looking at replies to your tweet, but then you are greeted by an embarrassing comment about your childhood. If only it could be hidden, right? That option might be possible soon. Jane Manchun Wong, a social media code cracker, found out that Twitter is developing a way to address the need to hide replies on their tweets. This feature has also been confirmed by the people behind the social media platform.
On Twitter’s reply tweet drop-down list, a ‘Hide Tweet’ option has been added. This allows users to make a reply hidden from everyone who will come across the post including themselves. However, compared to Facebook’s ‘Hide comment’ option, Twitter gives people a choice to view those tweets. This is possible by clicking the ‘View Hidden Tweets’ on the drop-down list.
Although it is a handy feature that can block out spammers and disturbing comments, it can also be harmful in other instances. For example, if a seller on Twitter chose to block a tweet about a complaint, this can help freshen their page, but there will be a question of integrity. However, it would not be a problem if other users chose to view hidden tweets. The problem is, not all people even bother to click that option.
Overall, this new feature on Twitter can have a positive or negative impact depending on how it will be used. It can be the solution that people are looking for to mute those annoying spams or it can cause transparency problems when it comes to influential people and commercial posts. Whatever impact it might bring, we can only know about its full extent when it is finally released for public use within the next months. But when it is finally released, let us be responsible and stay vigilant to maintain social media transparency.
