  2. Essere (to be) and Avere (to have) • They are both used frequently to describe people, places, and things. • Unlike English, subject pronouns in Italian are often omitted For example: He is kind/gentile. = È gentile.

  3. Essere • Io sono • Tu sei • Lei/lei/lui è • Noi siamo • Voi siete • Loro sono

  4. Avere • It is used to talk about possessions. For example: Gli studenti hanno il libro d’italiano The students have the Italian book. It is used to talk about certain physical features. For example: Il bambino ha le orecchie grandi. The baby boy has big ears.

  5. Avere (continuato) • The verb, “Avere” is also used in idiomatic expressions. • These expressions do not translate well into English For example: Mario ha caldo Mario is hot Ugo ha freddo Ugo is cold Antonella ha torto Antonella is wrong.
