Math Workshop: ~ I can count objects to 5. ~ I can identify 4 basic shapes. ~ I can identify 2D shapes. Reading Workshop: ~ I can actively engage in group reading activities with purpose and understanding. Skills Block (Phonics): ~ I can read the sight words. ~ I can identify the sound of “B”. ~ I can print upper & lowercase letter “Bb” Classroom Happenings: Remind- Remind is a free service to teachers that allows me to send short text messages to our class. Please go to www.remind.com/join/evermank and follow the directions. You must do this to receive class updates! It is free and private ~ no one will see your phone number, not even me. Water Bottles - Water is good for the brain! Your child can keep a WATER bottle on their table during the day. It MUST be a spill proof bottle and ONLY can water. Extra Set of Clothes – Please send in a complete change of clothes for your child (pants, shirt, underwear, socks) in a zip lock bag. We will hang it in their locker. Sometimes accidents happen. Book Order – Scholastic Book order is coming home today. This is a good chance to purchase books for your child at a very low price. For every dollar spent our class receives bonus points for books in our classroom. See attached for directions for online orders or you can send in a check made out to Scholastic and return the order form. Classroom Website– our classroom website is up to date. If you need any information it will be listed there – newsletters, permission slips, snack calendars, etc. MAP– The students will taking their MAP test this week in the computer lab. We take this test 3 times a year and it is a good tool to measure growth. Please don’t put to much weight into these beginning of the year scores. Remember we are looking for growth over time. Treasure Box– start saving all those McDonalds toys and other little toys. We have a treasure box and the kids love it. Field Trips–We have two field trips coming up. Please send permission slips in by this Friday! Homework: 1. Read 20 minutes for 5 nights a week. Make sure you record it on your reading log (these will be checked every Monday). 2. Read “Take Home Book” every night (this can be part of your 20 minutes of nightly reading. 3. Read ABC linking chart nightly.
Dates to Remember: With the beginning of school we will have many safety drills. Please discuss these with your child and reassure them that these are just for practice so that we know how to be safe! September 5 – Earthquake Drill September 9 – Severe Weather Drill September 10 – Lock Down Drill September 8 - McDowell Place Visit September 11 – Midterm September 11 – Downtown Danville Field Trip September 18 – Colt’s Cuisine – Fundraiser at Sonic – come and enjoy dinner at Sonic between 5-7:00pm and Sonic will donate a portion of your dinner to WES. September 22-26 – WES Kids Care Week – to benefit Juvenile Diabetes (more info to come) September 26 – Grandparents Day – Grandparents are invited to come to school and see what we are learning – more info to come. September 26 – Kona Ice Make sure you bring your BEE folder to school every day!!!!!!!! Take Home Books:Your child began bringing home books on their reading level last week. They will choose a book every morning to put in their BEE Folder. This book must be returned every day, as we use them during our small group reading instruction. Your child may bring home the same book more than once. Repeated rereading of the same book helps with fluency and comprehension. Notes from the Office: * 3rd Annual “Kick Hunger out of Danville/Boyle County” will be September 5th at Rebel Stadium. Please bring in non-perishable items to WES or to the Danville vs. Boyle County Football game. All proceeds will benefit New Hope Food Pantry. * Free breakfast for students provided by any central and southeastern McDonalds on Sept. 3rd from 6:30-9:30am. Students have a choice from Egg White Delight McMuffin or Oatmeal and milk or small orange juice!
Map • Book order • Web site • Web based curriculum – We have 3 web based programs that we will use in our classroom. Two are new to Woodlwan; Moby Max (Math) & Lexia (Phonics) There are papers coming home today explainThere are two papers coming home today explaining two new programs we will be using in the classroom and you will be able to use at home. Moby Max (Math) and Lexia (Phonics). We will also being using Raz Kids which is a web based Reading program. • Kindergarten: • Singing and moving is essential for musical awareness at Kindergarten. We have sung several game songs that require some physical activity in addition to singing. We have also talked about beat through experiences with hand movements and walking or marching. Encourage your child to share songs they learn at school. No matter their singing ability, encourage and support their efforts, however great or small.
