Understanding the NB Philosophy • Find the 5 Core Propositions in your Candidate Information • Group yourselves in teams of 4-5 • Read your assigned proposition and discuss with your team the following: “Why is this important to good teaching? And “How will you incorporate this proposition in your portfolio?”

15. Really Good Idea • Think in terms of accomplishments that all lead you to be the teacher you are today.

16. Writing Tips • A good way to organize each accomplishment is as follows: • Nature: What is this accomplishment? • Significance: Why is this important to me as a teacher and to my students or families? • Student Impact: How did this impact your students or other teachers’ students?

17. Please don’t forget! • There are a few things you MUST do: 1. Parent/family communication must be ongoing 2. Professional development must be ongoing 3. Each accomplishment must demonstrate impact on student learning

18. Reflection • A reflection is not a summary!

19. So What IS It? • A reflection should address why the body of your accomplishments together have made you a better teacher. • You should reflect basically on the student impact because of what you learned in the chosen accomplishments.

22. Documentation Hints • Don’t panic!!! • Three basic types: verification forms, artifacts and communication logs • One person can only sign one verification form. • Communication log is not required. • Documentation is not required for every aspect of your accomplishments.

Documentation Hints (cont.) • It is wise to have at least one piece of documentation for each accomplishment. • Follow the directions closely about where to place your documentation in submitting your portfolio. • Do not worry about creating “works of art” for your docs. They should be, however, legible.

26. All portfolios are scored on a four-point scale: 1-4……however…… The scoring scales looks more like…. -1 1 +1; -2 2 +2; -3 3 +3; -4 4 +4 Scoring system

27. The values of +’s and –’s are .25 points. So….the scores could be: A minimum of .75 (score of 1-) to a maximum of 4.25 (score of 4+) and anywhere in between those numbers. Thus scores could be: .75; 1.0; 1.25; 1.75; 2.0; 2.25; 2.75; 3.0; 3.25; 3.75; 4.0; 4.25 To further elaborate…

35. Read and Re-read Standards and Core Propositions • While it is NOT necessary to quote standards language in your write-up, it is important to demonstrate that you have incorporated the National Board philosophy into your teaching regimen.

36. Read and re-read the entry‘s guiding questions • Each section of each entry has guiding questions that need to be answered in the body of your writing. It is not necessary to repeat an answer if it satisfies more than one guiding question. • It is not necessary to answer the questions in order as they are presented. As a master teacher, you may choose how to organize your writing to best highlight your teaching process. • There are many pathways (styles) to success in National Board certification .

Organize your “absolutes” • After careful consideration of your Standards, Core Propositions, and the entry description, decide how you would like to demonstrate that from your teaching • Decide what activities you want to include to best highlight your teaching strategies (outline or list) • Include goals and objectives (for most entries)

38. Iif it’s a video entry…………go over it MULtiple times and plan to use quotes!

40. Start with……. • Begin by creating a • verbal picture of • your student /s • to demonstrate • Knowledge of Students

41. Knowledge of students activity • Think of a class that you have had. • Describe that class (or student) to a shoulder partner. • Think of everything that will “paint” a picture of that class to your partner.

42. Be sure to include……. • Knowledge of Students (known as KOS) • Goals and Results of your Goals (if required) • Procedures (related to Standards) • Justification for teaching procedures (should relate to KOS and include stories and quotes) • If you are asked to analyze a video, be sure to include quotes! • Reflection

43. No-No’s • Leave out religious or political viewpoints, or things that might be construed to be controversial or negative.

44. Check it over • Look for NB regulations like: • Font • Page length • Spacing • Margins

45. Really, really important step • Find a trusted friend – not necessarily in your teaching area – and have them read your entry for you. If they don’t understand something, don’t argue – CHANGE IT!

46. Use your CMS Support Services to review/facilitate your writing process.

47. Take a second look…… • …..at your Scoring Guide and Evaluation of Evidence Guide. • ** Read each part with careful attention to the arrows. If you can’t HONESTLY say that all those items in your entry are clearly stated, GO BACK and REVISE.

48. And then there’s assessment center……. • You must get an appointment to take the assessment center exercises. • You will take this part at a testing center located at several different sites locally, and if available, you can choose your time and /or place. • You will have 6 questions in your area of expertise to answer. You will have 30 minutes to answer each question. Each question will likely have more than one part. • Your CMS National Board facilitator will help guide you through the process before your appointment time.
