Broken Rights • From the UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS made in December 1948, Religious Persecution worldwide has led to the following Right being broken; • 18.   Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.

  3. Issue • The Hindu population in Pakistan has reduced from 26%, in 1947, right down to 2% • Several Hindus had been constantly harassed and killed in large numbers. Hindu women were attacked and kidnapped. • Between the period of 1970 – 1971 was the main torture and a huge massacre • The issue was so severe that in the early 1990s, over 300 Hindu temples were destroyed • This caused the largest number of Hindus to migrate from Pakistan

Where? • Muslim extremists are very common in Pakistan • Hence, many Hindus in Pakistan will not be very welcome into the country • This particularly occurs around the border of India & Pakistan – including places like Sindh and Kashmir • Such places used to be widely populated by Indians before the partition, which occurred in 1947.

  5. UN Actions & Plans • The UN has yet bee involved in promoting harmony between these two countries.

  6. What can WE do? • Through several sports such as cricket, and hockey the two countries have tried to reconcile and promote harmony within the two countries. • It has been well-known that India had lent a great helping-hand towards Pakistan during its huge earthquake in October 2005

  8. Issue • The government has brutally oppressed the Shi'ite population (the Sunni portion of the population is politically dominant) and the Kurds who live in the northern part of the country. The Assyrian Christians who also live in the North have suffered numerous injustices, including forced relocations and artillery bombardments. The Assyrians are often accused of aiding the Kurds, who are struggling to create their own state. This oppression, although negatively affecting the church isn’t per se religiously motivated.

  11. What can WE do? • Pray for the Christians of Iraq that they may be protected from harm and that the Christian message may be heard and received by all. Pray that they may have the chance to serve those who continue to suffer from war and the on-going economic sanctions against Iraq. • email at icc@persecution.org

  13. Issue • The key issue is the religious persecution of Hmong Christians in Vietnam.

  14. Where? • This issue is a problem in Vietnam because the Vietnamese authorities feel it necessary to step up their campaign of Hmong Christian Persecution. Sources say that authorities even threatened to murder religious leaders.

  15. UN Actions & Plans • The UN has clearly stated in its Universal Declaration of Human Rights that all humans have a right to their own beliefs.

  16. What can WE do? • We can support the Hmong Christians and encourage them to pursue their religious beliefs. We should also report and crimes of racial discrimination to the necessary authorities.
