Immigration in Utah A Sequence of Events
Assignment • As I read the captions to you, look at the pictures. • Pay attention to the sequence of the journey. • After we finish the photo album, you will write a paragraph describing the journey’s sequence.
At first you would travel across the ocean on sailing ships powered by wind. The ships were slow and many people got sick. Deaths from disease were common.
When you arrived in New York Harbor, you had to wait in long lines to be examined by a doctor and government officials. Sometimes it took days.
If the doctor decided you had a disease, you had to get on a ship and go back home. If someone in your family was ill or not allowed to go on, you had to decide if you would leave them behind or return home as a family.
If you passed the medical exam, you had to get to the Salt Lake Valley by riverboat as far as you could get.
When you couldn’t get any further by riverboat, you had to hire an ox and wagon.
Once the railroad was finished in 1869, you could ride the train to Utah.
